I’ve been reading The Creative License by Danny Gregory after The Artist’s Way. It’s a more practical, hands-on guide to art than The Artist’s Way, focusing on drawing and journalling versus the overall creative process and unlocking your artist. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, but I enjoy the exercises and Gregory’s philosophies around journalling.

Current sketchbooks I've been reaching for. One from Artist's Loft, the smaller one I made.

While I haven’t been journalling the way that he recommends, I have been sketching more. The exercises in the first chapter unlocked something in my brain, and I don’t get as hung up on the little details as I used to. When I would sketch, I would get stuck on making sure it was perfect and everything was aligned. I’d be discouraged when the outline didn’t look right and hyperfixate on it, when as soon as I put any details, it would look better immediately. I’m not happy with every sketch that I’ve done, but here are a few spreads or sketches from the last week that I enjoyed making.
